Nigeria → UK: The CV Mistakes That Get You Auto-Rejected

Most Nigerian applicants who get auto-rejected in the UK are not underqualified — their CV simply fails a filter before a human ever opens it. Some filters are software (an applicant tracking system that can't parse the layout), and some are human recruiters who bin a CV in ten seconds because it looks wrong for the market. This is a checklist of the mistakes that trigger those rejections, each with the specific fix. Work through it, then run a free ATS check to confirm your CV actually clears the machine.

Mistake 1: Keeping personal details UK employers can't accept

Date of birth, marital status, state of origin, religion, gender and a photo are normal on a Nigerian CV and a red flag on a UK one. UK employers avoid this information to stay clear of discrimination risk, and some will discard a CV that volunteers it.

Fix: delete all of it. Your contact line needs only name, city, phone (with country code), email and LinkedIn.

Mistake 2: Printing your referees on the CV

A full list of referees with names, titles and phone numbers is expected in Nigeria and premature in the UK. It wastes space and exposes your contacts' details.

Fix: remove the list entirely and replace it with a single line: "References available on request." Provide details only when asked, later in the process.

Mistake 3: A four-to-six page CV

Length that reads as thorough in Lagos reads as unfocused in London. Recruiters expect to grasp your fit in two pages.

Fix: cut to two pages. Keep the last 10–15 years, summarise older roles in one line each, and delete secondary-school detail, long training lists and "Declaration" paragraphs.

Mistake 4: No personal statement

UK CVs open with a short personal statement; many Nigerian CVs jump straight into personal particulars or education. Without that opening summary, a recruiter has to hunt for your value.

Fix: add 3–4 lines at the top stating your profession, your strongest proof, and the role you want — e.g. "IFRS-fluent accountant (ACCA) with six years in audit, seeking a management accounting role."

Mistake 5: Duties instead of achievements

"Responsible for managing the accounts payable function" tells a UK recruiter nothing about impact. British CVs lead with results.

Fix: start each bullet with a verb and end with an outcome.

Before: Responsible for reconciling the company's monthly accounts.

After: Reconciled £2m in monthly accounts across three entities, cutting month-end close from 10 days to 6.

Estimate honestly with scope or ranges if you lack exact figures — never invent numbers.

Mistake 6: Nigerian spelling and untranslated qualifications

UK ATS keyword matching is literal. American or inconsistent spelling, and qualifications a UK recruiter can't place, both weaken your match.

Fix:

  • Set the document language to English (UK): organise, optimise, programme, centre, licence.
  • Name qualifications in UK terms: "BSc Accounting" or "HND", ACCA/ICAN/IFRS spelled in full, NYSC as one line if relevant.
  • Drop CTC, salary expectations and notice period — they never appear on a UK CV.

Mistake 7: A layout the ATS can't read

This is the silent killer. Two-column templates, tables, text boxes, headers/footers, logos and photos scramble when an applicant tracking system reads them as one plain-text column. Your job titles and ACCA can vanish into the wrong field.

Fix: use a single-column layout, standard headings (Work Experience, Education, Key Skills), and a text-based .docx or PDF — never a scanned image.

Mistake 8: Ignoring right-to-work

An overseas application with no mention of work eligibility makes a UK employer assume complications and move on.

Fix: add a short line — "Eligible to work in the UK" or a note on your visa route — near the top or in your personal statement.

The quick pre-send checklist

  • No photo, DOB, marital status, state of origin or religion
  • Referees replaced with "References available on request"
  • Two pages maximum
  • Personal statement at the top
  • Bullets show quantified achievements, not duties
  • UK spelling and UK-mapped qualifications
  • Single-column, ATS-safe layout in .docx or text PDF
  • Right-to-work status stated
