India → UK: The CV Mistakes That Get You Auto-Rejected

Most rejections at the top of a UK hiring funnel are silent. No feedback, no reply — often a screening filter or a rushed recruiter that discarded the CV in seconds. When you are applying from India into the UK, a handful of specific, avoidable mistakes trigger those silent rejections again and again. This is the fix-it checklist. To catch the machine-readable problems before a human ever weighs in, run a free ATS check and see what a UK system actually extracts from your file.

Mistake 1: The photo, DOB and personal particulars

An Indian CV that opens with a photo, date of birth, marital status and father's name reads as instantly foreign — and a photo actively raises bias-risk concerns that make some UK recruiters discard it. Fix: delete every personal particular. Name, city, phone, professional email and LinkedIn is the entire header. No photo, no age, no marital status, no nationality beyond your right to work.

Mistake 2: A four-page CV

Three-to-five-page CVs are common in India and excessive in the UK, where two pages is the ceiling. A recruiter who sees page four assumes you can't prioritise. Fix: cut to two pages. Drop school marks, hobbies, the "Declaration", and ancient roles. Keep depth only on recent, relevant experience.

Mistake 3: No personal statement

UK CVs open with a short three-to-four-line personal statement; jumping straight into work history skips the framing a UK reader expects — and forfeits prime keyword space. Fix: add a tailored opening paragraph naming your role, headline strengths and direction, echoing the job posting's language.

Mistake 4: Duties instead of achievements

"Responsible for handling the team and ensuring quality" tells a recruiter nothing. UK CVs list results. Fix: start each bullet with a verb and end with an outcome. Turn "Responsible for testing" into "Led a five-person QA team that cut post-release defects by introducing automated regression tests." If you lack exact figures, use honest scope ("across three regions") — never invent numbers.

Mistake 5: American — or Indian — spelling

A CV full of optimize, organize and center signals it was written for the wrong market. Fix: switch to UK spelling throughout — optimise, organise, centre, programme, labour, analyse. Set your document language to English (UK) so the checker catches the rest.

Mistake 6: Wrong dates and the word "resume"

Writing dates as MM/DD/YYYY confuses UK readers, and calling the document a "resume" or "bio-data" marks you as an outsider. Fix: use DD/MM/YYYY (or "Mar 2022 – Present") and call it a CV, the universal UK term.

Mistake 7: Untranslated qualifications and vocabulary

UK screeners match on UK terms. An Indian CV that references local accounting standards or job vocabulary won't match a UK posting. Fix: map to the UK equivalents. In finance, name IFRS and UK GAAP, and spell out ACA or ACCA where you hold them. Mirror the posting's exact phrasing rather than your home-market synonyms.

Mistake 8: Hiding — or omitting — your visa status

UK employers screen hard on right-to-work, and silence on it creates doubt. Fix: add one clear line. If you need sponsorship, state it: "Eligible for UK Skilled Worker visa sponsorship." If you already hold the right to work, say so. Clarity here removes the recruiter's biggest unspoken question.

Mistake 9: A CV the ATS can't read

The most invisible auto-rejection: a file the parser mangles. Fix — the quick checklist:

  • Submit a .docx or text-based PDF, never a scanned image.
  • No tables, columns, text boxes, or logos carrying key information.
  • Keep contact details in the body, not the header/footer.
  • Use standard section headings ("Work Experience", "Education", "Skills").
  • Match keywords to the posting's own wording.

Fix them, then verify
