The Australia Résumé Format Explained — for Indian Job Seekers

If you built your CV in India and are now applying for roles in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, the document needs more than a find-and-replace. The Australian résumé follows its own structural conventions, and getting them right is the difference between reaching a recruiter and getting filtered out before a human ever sees you.
Length: two to three pages is normal
The biggest surprise for most Indian applicants is length. In Australia, a résumé of two to three pages is standard and expected — not a red flag. A single cramped page reads as under-qualified for anything beyond entry level. Use the extra space to describe achievements properly rather than padding with filler. Depth is welcome; waffle is not.
The sections Australian recruiters expect
A clean Australian résumé usually runs in this order:
- Contact details — name, phone, email, city/state, and a LinkedIn URL. A full street address is optional.
- Personal statement / professional summary — three to four lines up top framing who you are and what you do.
- Key Skills — a dedicated section listing your core competencies and tools. This is a genuine Australian convention, and it doubles as a keyword anchor for the ATS.
- Professional experience — reverse-chronological, achievement-led.
- Education and certifications — degrees, plus any Australian licences or recognised qualifications.
- Referees — usually "available on request".
The Key Skills block matters more than it looks. It gives the scanning software a concentrated list of your capabilities near the top of the document, which improves how your experience is matched to the role.
No photo, no personal details
This is where Indian and Australian conventions diverge sharply. Australian résumés do not include a photo, and they leave out date of birth, marital status, gender, religion, nationality and a full home address. Anti-discrimination norms mean recruiters neither expect nor want this information — including it can make your résumé look dated or even create legal awkwardness for the employer. Delete all of it.
Dates, spelling and the small stuff
Use the Australian date format — DD/MM/YYYY — consistently across the whole document. Mixing formats confuses both readers and parsers.
Switch your spell-check to Australian English. That means organise, specialise, centre, labour, programme and analyse — not the American spellings your software may default to. It is a small signal, but it quietly tells a recruiter you understand the market you are applying into.
Selection criteria and STAR responses
Many Australian roles — especially in government, universities and the public sector — ask you to address selection criteria. These are specific statements ("Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities") that you answer in separate written responses, not inside the résumé itself. The expected structure is STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. If a job ad lists selection criteria, treat those responses as a required companion document. Skipping them usually means automatic disqualification.
How Australian ATS parsing differs
Most large Australian employers screen applications through an applicant tracking system — commonly SEEK for job boards and platforms like Workday for enterprise recruiting. These systems read your résumé before a person does, so structure it for machines as well as humans:
- Submit a .docx or a text-based PDF, never a scanned image or a design-heavy template.
- Use standard section headings the parser recognises ("Professional Experience", "Education", "Key Skills").
- Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, headers/footers and graphics for core content — parsers often drop or scramble text inside them.
- Mirror the exact keywords from the job ad, particularly in your Key Skills and summary.
- Keep one clear, single-column layout with a common font.
Because the format also carries into skilled-migration contexts — whether you are applying under a 189, 190 or 482 visa pathway — a clean, parseable, Australian-style résumé serves you across both job applications and employer-sponsored routes.
The fastest way to know whether your document survives parsing is to test it. You can run a free ATS check to see exactly how a scanner reads your résumé and where text is being lost. Put it to the test
Reformatting for Australia is mostly subtraction — remove the photo and personal details, add a Key Skills section, fix the dates and spelling, and let the document breathe across two or three pages. Once you have made those changes, run a free ATS check to confirm your new résumé parses cleanly before you send a single application.
