LinkedIn for the India→US Job Switch

If you're switching from India to the US, LinkedIn for US jobs works differently than it does for the Indian market: US recruiters search by keywords, filter by location, and expect an achievement-driven profile that mirrors a US résumé. Set your location and headline to match the roles you want, load your profile with the exact terms US job descriptions use, and you become findable to the recruiters who source candidates before a job is even posted. Get those basics wrong and you stay invisible no matter how strong your background is.

Why US recruiters can't find your India profile

US recruiters live in LinkedIn Recruiter search. They type a title, add skills, and set a location filter. If your profile doesn't carry the US-standard title, the right keywords, and a location that matches their search, you don't appear, full stop. Many strong India-based candidates are simply filtered out at the location and keyword step, never rejected on merit because they were never seen.

Set location and openness correctly

This is the highest-leverage change and the one most people get wrong.

Location

If you're relocating or open to US roles, consider setting your location to the US metro you're targeting (or keep India but make openness explicit). Recruiters filtering by "New York" or "San Francisco" won't see a profile pinned to a city they didn't search. Be honest about where you are in conversations, but don't let a location filter erase you from the results.

Open to work

Turn on "Open to work" and, in the settings, choose whether recruiters only or everyone sees it. Specify US locations and the job titles you want. This feeds directly into recruiter search.

Work authorization

State your situation briefly and honestly in the About section, for example "Open to US roles; require H-1B sponsorship" or "US work-authorized (STEM OPT)." Clarity removes a recruiter's biggest hesitation. Never claim authorization you don't hold.

Your default headline is just your current title, which wastes prime keyword space. Rewrite it to combine your target role and core skills.

Before:

Senior Software Engineer at [Company]

After:

Senior Software Engineer | Java, Spring Boot, AWS | Distributed Systems | Open to US Roles

The second version hits multiple keywords a US recruiter might search and signals your intent. Use the titles US companies actually use, not internal India-specific grade names.

Load the profile with the right keywords, honestly

LinkedIn search ranks profiles partly on keyword relevance across your headline, About, experience, and skills. Pull the exact terms from the US job descriptions you're targeting, then place the ones you genuinely have throughout:

  • About: 3-5 short paragraphs telling your story with target keywords woven in naturally
  • Experience: quantified, US-style bullets, not duty lists
  • Skills: add and reorder so your top target skills sit first
  • Featured: link work samples, a portfolio, or a strong post

Only claim skills and tools you can defend in an interview. Keyword stuffing you can't back up gets exposed fast in US technical screens.

Make your Experience bullets match US résumé standards

The same rules that fix a résumé fix a LinkedIn profile: turn responsibilities into quantified achievements.

Before:

Handled backend development and coordinated with the QA team.

After:

Built and shipped 12 backend APIs serving 500K daily requests; cut post-release defects by tightening the QA handoff.

Keep your LinkedIn and résumé aligned. Recruiters cross-check them, and mismatched titles or dates raise doubts.

Keep LinkedIn and your résumé in sync

Because US recruiters read both, treat them as one system. When you tailor your résumé for a role, echo the same keywords and titles on LinkedIn. If you're targeting a specific track like software engineer roles, align the language on both so a recruiter sees a consistent story.

Before you finalize the résumé half of that pair, run it through our free ATS résumé checker. It shows every check it runs and the exact fix for each gap, so you know precisely which US keywords and sections you're missing, then you can carry those same terms onto your LinkedIn profile. It's free, no signup, and unlimited.

Build credibility signals US recruiters trust

Beyond keywords, US recruiters weigh signals of engagement and proof:

  • A professional photo (unlike a résumé, a LinkedIn photo is expected)
  • Recommendations from managers and peers, ideally naming specific results
  • A custom URL (linkedin.com/in/yourname)
  • Occasional posts or comments in your field to stay active in the feed
  • Skills with endorsements from people who actually worked with you

None of this requires exaggeration. Our truth-preserving approach applies here too: sharpen and reformat what you genuinely did, never invent it. Fabricated titles or fake endorsements unravel in reference checks.

Your India→US LinkedIn checklist

  • Location set to your target US metro (or openness made explicit)
  • "Open to work" on, with US titles and locations
  • Honest work-authorization note in About
  • Keyword-rich headline with your target role
  • Quantified, US-style experience bullets
  • Skills reordered to lead with target skills
  • Profile aligned with your ATS-checked résumé

Nail these and you go from invisible to searchable in the exact recruiter queries that matter for US roles.
