Indian CV vs US Résumé: 12 Differences

The core difference in the Indian CV vs US résumé comparison is philosophy: an Indian CV is a fuller personal record (photo, DOB, longer length, duties), while a US résumé is a lean, one-to-two-page marketing document built on quantified results with no personal details. Twelve concrete differences follow, each with the change to make. To see how your current document scores against a real US system, run a free ATS check.

If you built your CV in India, none of this means it was done wrong. It means the target changed. US recruiters and their applicant tracking systems expect a different shape.

The 12 differences

1. Name of the document

An Indian CV is often literally titled "Curriculum Vitae" or "Bio-Data." A US résumé has no title at all — your name is the heading.

2. Length

Indian CVs commonly run 3–5 pages. US résumés are 1 page under ~8 years of experience, 2 pages maximum after that. Cut everything that doesn't win this job.

3. Photo

Indian CVs frequently include a headshot. US résumés never do — photos raise discrimination-bias concerns and many recruiters discard résumés that include one.

4. Personal details

Date of birth, age, gender, marital status, nationality, religion, and father's name are standard on Indian CVs and completely absent from US résumés. Our photo, DOB & personal details guide covers exactly what to remove.

5. Contact block

An Indian CV may list a full home address and passport number. A US résumé shows only City, State · phone (with country code) · email · LinkedIn.

6. Duties vs achievements

This is the biggest gap. Indian CVs describe responsibilities; US résumés prove results with numbers.

Indian-CV style:

Responsible for managing vendor relationships and procurement.

US-résumé style:

Negotiated with 30+ vendors to cut procurement costs 18% ($1.2M annually) while maintaining delivery SLAs.

7. Education detail

Indian CVs list 10th and 12th standard marks, aggregate percentages, and every institution. US résumés list your highest degree, the institution, and graduation year — school-level marks are dropped, GPA is optional.

8. Salary and notice period

CTC, LPA, expected salary, and notice period are normal on Indian CVs. On a US résumé they never appear — compensation is a later conversation, not a résumé line.

9. Spelling and vocabulary

Indian CVs use British spelling (optimise, organisation, centre). US résumés use US spelling (optimize, organization, center). Because ATS keyword matching is literal, this affects your score.

10. Layout

Indian CV templates often use two columns, tables, or a photo sidebar. US résumés use a single column with standard headings so an ATS parses them cleanly. Fancy multi-column templates are a leading cause of parsing failure.

11. Dates

Indian CVs use DD/MM/YYYY. US résumés use Month YYYY – Month YYYY, which reads unambiguously to a US audience and parser.

12. Closing elements

Indian CVs often end with a "Declaration," a signature, a date, and "References available on request." A US résumé ends with your last relevant section — no declaration, no signature, no references list.

Making the switch honestly

Converting a duty-based CV into a results-based résumé tempts people to inflate. Don't. A US recruiter checks references and asks pointed interview questions, and a fabricated metric collapses fast. If you don't have an exact number, use an honest estimate or scope ("for a 15-person team," "across 3 regions"). Our AI builder rewrites your bullets for impact while preserving the truth — it sharpens what you did, it doesn't invent what you didn't.

Check the result against a real ATS

The reason to verify instead of assume: parsing and keyword problems are invisible in your PDF and only surface when a machine reads it. A transparent checker shows every check it runs and the exact fix for each miss — not a mystery score you can't act on.

Rebuild your document using the 12 differences above, then run a free ATS check — no signup, unlimited runs — and correct each flagged item before you apply.
