No German-language signal for a German-facing role
Bookkeeping, tax (Steuer) and statutory reporting are done in German and under German law. A CV with no German level attached reads as a hard blocker for local finance roles — state it explicitly, even when the employer is international.
Photo, DOB and declaration clutter
The traditional Lebenslauf photo and personal block, plus an Indian-style 'I hereby declare' line, add ATS parse noise and date the CV. Use a clean, factual, photo-optional layout and cut the declaration entirely.

- Do I need German to work as an accountant in Germany?
- For most local accounting roles, yes — statutory work, tax and reporting are in German under German law. Some international shared-service and group-reporting roles run in English, but German is a strong advantage. State your level on the CV.
- Should I mention US GAAP?
- Only if the specific role needs it, e.g. a US-owned group. Default to HGB and IFRS, and highlight DATEV or SAP experience — that is what the German market screens for.
- Is a photo expected on a German accounting CV?
- Traditional local employers still often expect a professional photo, but a clean photo-optional CV is increasingly accepted and parses better through an ATS. Judge by the employer.
